The compact centre looks like Elton John’s dressing table in spring and summer, when this “floral town” is bedecked in blooms. On the banks of the River Wharfe, within easy reach of Leeds, York and Harrogate, the market town of Wetherby is a reet nice spot. Gorgeous options with availability later in the year include rustic Allmans Heath Cottage Byre (sleeps two, from £80 a night) and Woodcock Farm, a design-led barn conversion with two cottages each sleeping two (from £110 a night). If you fancy staying over, offers the smart Kinder Apartment (sleeps two, from £435 in May). Polish off your day with a superior pint from Glossop’s Howard Town Brewery, whose tap beer garden has just reopened. Drivers or cyclists could follow the A57 Snake Pass across the park to Ladybower Reservoir, Edale and the Hope valley for more outdoorsy shenanigans. Options include the seven-mile Longdendale Trail cycle route along an old railway trackbed to five reservoirs, the Pennine Way or the Pennine Bridleway National Trail. Pick up healthy picnic stuff from zero waste-focused Glossop Wholefoods and head out on the many walking and cycling trails into the Dark Peak region – that’s the wilder, higher moorland and gritstone area of the Peak District (as opposed to the lower White Peak limestone plateau). Its oldest parts date from the 12th century, cotton mills have been transformed into shops and pubs, and pre-pandemic there was a growing creative community of musicians, artists, makers and founders of independent stores and venues. Name the key towns around the fringes of the Peak District national park and you’re likely to think of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock first, but Glossop, to the north-west of the park not far from Manchester, has plenty going for it. Accommodation options left with Sykes for the next month include the black-and-white half-timbered Stone House (sleeps four, £555 for seven nights in May) in the village of Caynham three miles away, which has its own bronze and iron age earthworks. This one’s as quirky as they come, a trove of the nostalgic ephemera of everyday life. Like many of the country’s small museums, the pandemic left the Land of Lost Content (adult £8, child £4, book ahead) in nearby market town Craven Arms, desperate for visitors. Opt for takeaway salad boxes or cook-at-home three-course-meal kits from The Green Cafe, grab a box of nibbles go from Cicchetti Bar Ludlow or fine fare from Harp Lane Deli, where ingredients such as Amalfi lemons, n’duja and cognac are used as commonly as salt and butter by most of us.Īlong with the medieval streets of black- and-white buildings, this town is particularly ogle-able thanks to the sight of Ludlow Castle (adult £8, child £3.50) rising above the River Teme in the centre. In a region famed for its wealth of local produce though, even low-key venues pack a flavour into every dish.

Surgical procedures can relieve pressure on the spinal cord and brain. Neurosurgeons can't alter the primary injury suffered by the brain or spinal cord, but they can prevent secondary damage from occurring. The chance of recovery is greatest in patients 40 and younger after a traumatic brain injury. For example, if a stroke causes an area of brain damage, other parts of the nervous system can take over the lost function of the damaged area. Simply put, when one area loses function, other undamaged areas of the brain can take over. This is called "plasticity." Luckily, the brain has a lot of built-in redundancy. However, this part of the nervous system can reorganize in response to an injury. Injured nerve cells in the central nervous system typically do not regenerate. These injuries are often called traumatic brain injuries or traumatic spine injuries. They can be caused by an auto accident, sports injury, fall, stroke, ruptured brain aneurysm, lack of oxygen, gunshots or an explosive blast. Injuries to the spinal cord or brain can happen in an instant. The head is connected to the spinal cord or brain, and the tail connects to a muscle or organ. Each neuron has a head called the cell body and a long tail called an axon. To put it simply, neurons are like electrical wires that are lined on the outside by special cells that provide insulation. These nerves fire muscles sense temperature and control your heart, lungs and other involuntary functions essential to life. The peripheral nervous system, on the other hand, connects the central nervous system with your internal organs, muscles and sensory tissues. The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, which is usually what first comes to mind for many people. Nervous system injuries can be painful, and cause weakness, tingling, numbness and even changes in blood circulation.Īll the neurons in your body start and end in your brain or spinal cord. This affects the brain's ability to communicate with your muscles and sensory organs. It can be damaged, and it heals with great difficulty, if at all. The nervous system receives and relays sensory information like vision, sound, smell, taste, touch and pain. Their connections, called synapses, reach all areas of the body. Learn more about what causes the burning sensation and when you should seek medical attention. The nervous system is a complex and wide-reaching network of nerve cells called neurons.
Questel did the role of Betty Boop the most out of everyone who did the role in the original series, and was known as the official voice of Betty Boop. Hines, Questel & Poe and Ann did a majority of the cartoons. It was originally thought that Mae Questel did the voice of Betty Boop for the entire Betty Boop cartoon series due to the fact that the original voice actresses were all uncredited for their roles as Betty Boop. She returned as Betty in the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 50 years later and was given great honors and tributes over the years as being the "best" voice of Betty Boop. Mae Questel returned to doing voice work for Famous Studios in 1943 for characters such as Olive Oyl and Little Audrey. Hines played the role of Olive Oyl from late 1938 until 1943. The Betty Boop voice was then assumed by Little Ann Little, Bonnie Poe and Margie Hines. Questel ceased doing Betty Boop in 1938, as she retired from her show business activities to raise a family. In the early 30s Mae also used to portray Betty Boop in person to help promote the series alongside Max Fleischer. Mae provided the voice for Betty Boop from 1931 to 1938. Oddly enough, Mae looked exactly like Betty Boop. Her voice and Betty Boop became synonymous.īonnie Poe was asked to take over Mae Questel's role in 1933 while Questel was preparing for a baby. Max finally found what he was looking for in 1931 when he came across the incomparable Mae Questel. The voice needed to be squeaky, but it also needed to be cute and sexy, to sing, to do good line readings, and be able to say and sing ' Boop-Oop-a-Doop' in exactly the right way. According to Richard Fleischer: "Several squeaky female voices were tried out in the early Betty Boops, but none seemed exactly right. She was later discovered by Max Fleischer and was hired to do the voice for Betty in the 1931 Talkartoon titled Silly Scandals. Mae would later impersonate stars from the 30s, from Fanny Brice to Eddie Cantor. At the age of 17, she won a contest imitating Helen Kane which was sponsored by Kane. Mae Questel was a actress and singer who was most associated with Betty Boop. This is untrue as Hines, the original voice of Betty Boop was brought back to play the role that she had originated in the very first cartoon to feature Betty Boop. According to Mae Questel, when the series ended in 1938 when she stopped doing the role the Fleischers never made another Betty Boop cartoon again. When Mae Questel retired in 1938 to raise a family, Hines was cast as Olive Oyl and she was also re-cast as Betty Boop up until the character was retired in 1939. film feature titled The Perfect Suitor as the leading lady alongside Benny Rubin and wanted to pursue a solo career. She was also to be featured in a Warner Bros. The reason for Hines leaving the Boop role was because her contract with Paramount to do the voice for Betty Boop had expired, and she was very busy at the time and had offers pouring in. S he then toured vaudeville and in 1932 signed a contract with the Van Beuren Studios to do voice-over for their animated cartoon series, mainly for Van Beuren's leading femme character Countess Cat. She also recorded dialogue for several of the 1932 cartoons before retiring from the role. Margie Hines did the voice for Betty Boop in a few cartoons from 1930 to 1931. Hines then went on to create the voice for Betty Boop, which was based on the baby-doll styled sensation of the time and was asked to perform " I Have To Have You " for the cartoon titled Dizzy Dishes. Marjorie Louise Hines won a Helen Kane imitation contest at a local cinema cathedral and was eventually seen by Billy Murray who worked for the Fleischer Studios. These added religious themes are part of what makes Pulp Fictiona multi-dimensional classic as well as one of the best crime movies ever made. Here is the actual scriptural text from Ezekiel 25:1517: This is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to stretch out my hand. It then makes statements of the power of faith at large, showcasing how valuable it can be in navigating chaotic times. In actuality only the very last line aligns with the Old Testament. It motivates some characters to freedom and it justifies the bad fates of the evil. Furthermore, Butch ultimately decides to go back and save Marsellus from Maynard, Zed, and the Gimp, just as Jules decides to spare the two robbers in the restaurant, which could mean that Butch and Jules are being rewarded for helping the weak.įaith is at the core of Pulp Fiction's narrative. Given Butch's decision to betray the mob and fight his own righteous fight, there is also reason to believe that God was helping him escape and start a new life. Both the death of Vincent and the assault of Marsellus are extremely unlikely, as they result from crossing the path of Butch at just the wrong moment in time. 'The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. What is he trying to say in simple terms Jules: Well there's this passage I got memorized. Pulp Fiction's narrative is full of unlikely coincidences that support Jules' articulate quote of divine intervention. I partially understand Jules' ending monologue at the end of Pulp Fiction, although the full meaning doesn't click for me. This decision is realized when Jules peacefully negotiates with two robbers that hold up the diner rather than kill them, which he is very capable of doing. Had Jules decided to continue with the mob, he could have easily been put in harm's way soon after. While Tarantino's alterations take the verse largely out of its original context of God administering judgment upon nations that deal in vengeance and malice, the new verse serves as a concise summary of the movie's Biblical themes.Īs Pulp Fiction 's non-chronological order shows in the earlier scenes, leaving was a good decision for Jules, as Vincent ends up dead the next day while their boss Marsellus is raped. Thus, once Jules is convicted by divine intervention, he starts focusing less on executing God's wrath, and more on carrying out God's mercy, deciding to leave his life of crime to start a new life of peace. Explaining Pulp Fiction's Bible Verse, Ezekial 25:17 By Jonah Rice Published 3 minutes ago Ezekiel 25:17 exists in the Bible as a far cry from the film's version, which was in turn. Tarantino likely added the additional text to make sure it included all the themes relevant to Jules (and to make for a better monologue). Ironically, while these themes are all present in other areas of the Bible, the real Ezekiel 25:17 only deals with God's vengeance and fury. |
